S Class Pacific 4-6-2

The four S class instances were built between 1928 to 1930, and were three cylinder locomotives designed specifically for the express passenger service Spirit of Progress . For this service they were streamlined in 1937, and later converted to oil-burning post-war.

Unfortunately they were all early casualties of the railways' conversion to diesels, and were all scrapped by the end of 1954.

  • Description : A Victorian Railways portrait of the first three S class in original unstreamlined form. I suspect this photo predates the completion of S303, or else the railways would surely have lined that one up as well!
