J Class Consolidation 2-8-0

The J class were a development of the earlier K class , and 60 of these locos were built by Vulcan and entered service during 1954. An unusual feature was that they built for easy conversion from 5'3" broad gauge to 4'8.5" standard gauge, simply by reversing the wheel centres. The last loco in the class, J559, had the dubious distinction of being the last steam locomotive to enter VR service.

  • Image : dir=vic/Jclass/ page=index 74418 bytes, 800x600 pixels
  • Date : April 1992 (?), catalogued 13 Aug 1997
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : personal photograph (Kodacolor Gold)
  • Description : J515 stands ready to depart Wagunyah, at the end of a pioneer branch kept open by the existence of Uncle Toby's, a large breakfast cereal processing plant. Indeed, this tour was announced as "possibly the last" to visit Wagunyah, but the line still survives as of March 1995. Behind the J is the "Yarra" palour car, a beautiful Victorian (ambiguity intended) sitting car, replete with window shades, bracket lights and lounge chairs.

  • Medium : Ektachrome, slide number 6805
  • Description : The Victorian Railways were happy to donate old locomotives to community groups (in stark contrast the their NSW counterpart), which is why nearly every country town in Victoria has (had) an engine like this sitting in a park. This one was at Colac (I had this previous ascribed to Donald, but it seems I was mistaken!). It has since been removed to East Ballarat for possible restoration by the West Coast Railway.
