General Victorian Scenes

These are some general scenes around the Victorian system, mostly of stations and track work, but some fun bits, too!

For example, Patrick Gigacz posted in the Victorian Railway Enthusiasts Facebook page this URL for V/Line working timetables. (accessed on 20190620:140557)

Gippsland Railway scenes

  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 11961
  • Description : The old tramway into the Koondrook sawmill was still in place when I visited the site in Jan 1982. I originally thought this was at Echuca (the layouts have a certain similarity), and this image (and the two following) were incorrectly labelled as Echuca-1/2/3. Thanks to an email from Darren French, we now have the site correctly identified! I revisited the site in Jun 2001, and you can see the changes that have taken place in subsequent images.

  • Image : dir=vic/misc/ page=index 147196 bytes, pixels

  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 11962
  • Description : The connection between the main line and the wharf line at Koondrook. (I have since discovered that this name is pronounced as though it were spelled "Kondrok".) The old goods shed in the background is still in use as a storage depot.

  • Image : dir=vic/misc/ page=index 64622 bytes, 800x600 pixels
  • Date : Dec 1989, catalogued 17 May 2000
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 18293
  • Description : The magnificent but rather lonely Serviceton Railway Station, built in the days when steam was king, and locos were changed here between the Victorian Railways (to the left) and South Australian Railways (to the right). The location is a rather desolate spot near the Victorian-South Australian border, on the main Melbourne to Adelaide line, and was the scene of a fatal accident involving the Overland and a goods train in 1954, almost at the end of steam on passennger service between the two cities. In fact, the accident hastened the introduction of the B class diesel electric (q.v.)

  • Image : dir=vic/misc/ page=index 75074 bytes, 800x600 pixels
  • Date : Dec 1989, catalogued 17 May 2000
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 18295
  • Description : "No Road" the sign says, and there certainly are a few roads missing in this photo. The area to the left of the line across to the water tanks was once a thriving engine roundhouse, turntable, coaling stage and watering facilities, now all gone bar the turntable pit and the water tanks. In a sense, the sign is a forlorn protest against the intrusion of roads into the railway scene, such that the thriving interstate traffic is now reduced to the occasional through goods that no longer even stops at this point. Most of the freight traffic, and virtually all passenger traffic now goes by road -- at least, what doesn't go by air!

  • Medium : email digital image, image location Spencer Street Station 1966
  • Description : A photo from the archives of Richard Felstead. Check out Richard's web site .A D3 (? I think) shunts carriages at Spenser Street Station. Both D3 and background are no more: the loco to the scrap heap, and the goods yard to the (insert your favourite sponsor here) Stadium. Bah!

  • Image : dir=vic/misc/ page=index 54753 bytes, 800x527 pixels
  • Date : Jun 1982, catalogued 11 Jul 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12233
  • Description : The low level of the water in Lake Hume means that the original site of Tallangatta can be discerned in this (rather gloomy) photograph. The line of the original railway is appears just to the foreground of the almost circular pool in the near distance. In the foreground, a large rock testifies to the closed state of the relocated railway, moved during the 50s when the Hume Weir was extended.
