K Class Consolidation 2-8-0

The K class was initially a bit of an experiment. An initial 10 were designed by the VR CME Alfred Smith in 1919, and built by Newport Workshops. They proved so successful that in 1940 when further motive power was required, an additional 43 were built. These later ones received some modifications, and the final seven had Boxpok wheels, seen in these photos on K190.

Finally here are the photos I emailed you about a few weeks ago. You may not want the departure photo as you can’t really see the engine, but the approach photo may be of interest. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem possible to make out the engine’s number. These photos were taken in November 1962 by my Dad, Jack Tucker, a short distance from Bright railway station.

I took their driver instruction course. And fantastic fun it was too! A childhood fantasy! The line from Maldon to Muckleford is (from memory) about 14kms and all down hill. Driving a loco is a lot to do with braking and winding that reversing wheel. Braking is surprisingly difficult as there is a considerable delay in the vacuum braking system. We were flat out at 20mph!! The experience is highly recommended if you've never done it before!"

The flour mills have gone, the sidings are just a stub track, and the occasion would be unlikely to be repeated because it was only due to a suburban guards strike that there were no electric passenger trains running, and hence the photo stop could be held with safety. Note that the photographer is standing in the middle of the up main track!
