The ZigZag Railway

The Lithgow Zig Zig is a relic from the great expansion era of NSW Railways, driven by Thomas (?) Whitton, an early civil engineer of the NSW railways. It was built to get down the Blue Mountains escarpment on the western side, to allow access to the fertile western plains of NSW.

I think this is loco 934 - it has it written on the plate on the boiler. Love the "beards" (and bellys) driving it!! A contrast in styles to the UK drivers!!! Apart from that I can tell you nothing about this loco. The photo was taken about 8 or 10 years ago.

See the entry for C17 class under the Queensland Railways Page for more information on C17 934.

  • Description : 4-6-2 ('Pacific'), express passenger engine. Built in 1956 at Walkers Ltd, Maryborough, Queensland. for c.45,665 pounds. These locomotives incorporated roller bearings and anti-vacuum brakes to prevent superheater elements burning when the locomotives were standing still. It was first based in Brisbane and later at Toowoomba, Queensland until it was taken out of service in 1970. Travelled 341,238 miles, a low mileage. It was bought by Zig Zag in 1975 and named 'City of Lithgow' in recognition of their financial and moral support. Also known as the 'Bety' after its telegraphic code. In service.

A very evocative shot of 934 on one of the "zigs" (or is it "zags")?!

Here's some more from the ZigZag railway in the Blue Mountains. City of Lithgow is on the right but I'll need you to identify 1047. Another Queensland import? The carriages I think come from the Brisbane suburban system but I may be wrong. The photo is a bit shaky but I thought you'd find it interesting. Taken about 10 years ago.
    Roger Marsh adds:
I think the carriages are a Comeng (Rocklea) set of dog boxes with wooden sides formerly used on the Brisbane and surrounding suburban network. I remember seeing carriages like them once during a power fade (thus diesels with every available coach took to the suburban network) in the late 80s.
