  • Description : At the passenger platform at Marree in the far north of South Australia, GM36 has done its duty in bring passengers from Port Pirie, where they had to change trains once already from the broad gauge. Now they have to transfer to the narrow gauge for the final leg of the Ghan journey to Alice Springs. But not for much longer. Within 3 months of this photo, the new standard gauge line to Alice was opened, followed somewhat later by the standard gauge into Adelaide. Now there is talk of running the Ghan from as far afield as Melbourne and Sydney, as a single gauge train. (Later note: now in operation, as of mid October 1998.)

  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12097
  • Description : At last! Something to relieve the monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor. The train stops at Cook, and passengers are relieved to be allowed off the train to stretch their legs and gaze in awe and wonder at the few trees in Cook (no, it wasn't a plane tree!), and also to relieve the monotonous, but not treeless, state of the resident(s) of Cook.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 40980 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Feb 1982, catalogued 30 May 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12098
  • Description : No, they're not trees relieving the monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor Plain, just some plain old power lines suppling the yard lighting at Cook. Well, calling it a yard is probably a little generous, but then you have to be generous when it comes to the Nullabor: it's SO BIG, and SO BORING! And, you'll be pleased to know, this is the last of these plainly boring captions. ENOUGH PUNishment!
