  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 22 Nov 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Ektachrome, slide number 7986
  • Description : Darth Vader eat your heart out! The force is with 4441's marker lights as they slice through the night, pulling away from Goulburn station with the Spirit of Progress. Has to be one of my favourite diesel shots (if there is such a thing: but see also D-944-1 ).

  • Image : dir=anr/ page=index 122793 bytes, 507x690 pixels
  • Date : 1973, catalogued 1996
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodak Photo CD, slide number 1455
  • Description : An atmospheric back-lit shot of 944 (and sister loco) lifting a down heavy goods out of Belair yard, while a RedHen in the background waits to return to Adelaide. The points in the foreground are the start of the single line to Melbourne. This photo destroys two myths: 1) that diesels are less air-polluting, and 2) that they don't make good photo subjects. Photographers will also appreciate the fact that this photo was taken into the sun. One of my favourite shots, but I will never understand the comment of one photo-judge who said "pity the turnout in the foreground is so prominent." Philistine!

A particular personal favourite. Same location as 5910-3 and 1709-3 .

  • Description : 3820 stands at the Demondrille coal stage late on Good Friday, 1973, replenishing her coal and water supplies for the trip to Melbourne. This trip was the first trip by standard gauge steam locos south of the NSW-VIC state border, on the standard gauge line laid in 1961. 3820 was accompanied by 3801, a maximum tonnage train, and hundreds of eager railfans.

  • Photographer : John Hurst

  • Image : dir=anr/ page=index 125542 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 13 Jan 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfacolor, slide number 8148
  • Description : On one of the last narrow gauge (3ft6in) Ghan trips, NJ1 pauses amidst the Sturt's Desert Pea to have her photo taken. The occasion was a group of ARHS ACT Divn passengers travelling to sample the old-world atmosphere of the Ghan. True, the steam locos had disappeared, and the motorail had appeared, but most of the rest of the Central Australia line was just as was mid-century.
