AD60 Class Garratt 4-8-4+4-8-4

The 60 class locomotives were built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester, and delivered to NSW over the period 1952-57. They had a massive tractive effort of nearly 60,000lbs, and were regarded as the most powerful locos in the southern hemisphere. Some were modified to increase their tractive effort to 63,000lbs, and had dual controls fitted to eliminate the need for turning on large turntables.

A dedicated group of volunteers at Canberra is working to restore 6029 to steam - you can read about their efforts at their 6029 Blog Page

  • Description : On a cold and frosty morning, 6029 heads north on the Main South through the Great Dividing Range. This section of track between Yass and Goulburn is perhaps the most demanding part of the Main South on locomotives and train crews, but 6029 was quite equal to the task, pulling only a light load of a half dozen or so carriages, made up from FS/TAM/BSR stock.

Several enthusiastic volunteers will rake her out, blow down the boiler, and make sure that she is in good condition for her next turn of duty.

  • Description : June long weekend, 1981, and 6029 crosses a billabong off the Lachlan river just south of Forbes in central NSW. Although the bridge looks like it can only barely take the weight, in fact the Garratts had wide route availability with their 16t axle loading. The only thing stopping them visiting all parts of the state was a union ban on running them through some single line tunnels, because of their enclosed cabs and the difficulty of egress within the confines of a tunnel.
