This trip was the first trip by standard gauge steam locos south of the NSW-VIC state border, on the standard gauge line laid in 1961. 3820 was accompanied by 3801, a maximum tonnage train, and hundreds of eager railfans.

  • Description : 3820 leads sister locomotives 3813 and 3801 around the curves near Menangle on the Main South, just out of suburban Sydney. This was the last time that these three locomotives were in steam together, and was one of the last great flings of steam railfanning trips in NSW before regular steam haulage disappeared in early 1973. Indeed, not only have triple 38s disappeared from this scene, but so has the tranquil countryside. A multi-lane freeway now bisects the bucolic background. (rescanned from original slide.)
