North Yorkshire Moors Railway

It was a fairly miserable day on both occasions when I visited NYMR, and the light wasn't the best either. On the first occasion, all was fairly quite, but on the second their Santa Special provided enough action to make a mid-December trip worthwhile!

  • Description : This is an S160 2253, which was built by Baldwin (USA) in 1943. The locomotive was shipped across to the UK in bits and then reassembled for use in the run up to D Day in 1944. The locomotive was shipped across to the mainland Europe in 1944 and in 1947 was sold to Poland as part of the Marshall Plan. The loco ran in Poland until 1985 when it was withdrawn. The locomotive was bought by a NYMR benefactor in 1991, and overhauled in Poland and then shipped to the UK in 1992. The loco ran until recently although was not loved by NYMR drivers and fireman, it is currently out of traffic and up for sale! Thanks to Peter Finch for this information.

  • Description : This is a 9F which came from Barry scrap yard in South Wales, the locomotive led to nomadic existence in preservation until recently. The engine is being restored at Crewe for use at the North Staffordshire Railway based near Leek. Thanks to Peter Finch for this information.
