Museums

We paid a quick visit to Manchester in late 1986 to visit friends from our time there in 1980, and also revisited the Liverpool Road station site, now a museum dedicated to transport.

Another visit in 2002 sees a few updates of the image collection.

  • Description : This sectioned loco was on display at the Manchester Transport Museum in 1986. This photograph shows No3 Pender a 2-4-0 tank engine built by Bayer Peacock of Manchester for the Isle of Man Railway. This network was 3 foot gauge, and ran from Douglas to Port Erin, Douglas to Ramsay/Peel. The system used almost exclusively locomotives like Pender and in all 15 were built, although the design was gradually enlarged over time culminating in Mannin. The railway became more dependant upon tourists for income and with the development of cheap package deals in the mid to late 60's the popularity of the Island Man and its Railway declined. The routes contracted so that today only Douglas to Port Erin remains, obviously with a reduction in the number of locomotives required to run a season service. Thus some locomotives were gifted to a volunteer group whilst other remain stored, and some sold off to private buyers, and thus Pender was bought for MSIM as it shows a successful Manchester built design. Thanks to Peter Finch for this information.
