Indian Railway Photographs

In 1999, I visited Delhi and Bombay in India, and there is a good swag of photos from the National Rail Museum in Delhi (yet to be scanned). Some others (notably from the famous Himalya and Darjeeling Railway) have been kindly donated to this collection by Stewart Hughes, per medium of email.

Trevor Case has also written to me with the following comments:

I've been enjoying dipping into your rail photo page, and look forward to a more serious session when I get time. I was particularly interested in your Asian page and enjoyed the Indian scenes, especially the crowd of onlookers as the engine was turned at Abu Road, please pass on my congratulations to Stewart.

You might like to check out the following link and think about adding it to your Indian site:

(ajh) Done. See above! Have a look at items 4. The NRM page 8. WP glory ... to which I have contributed, and 9. Pakistan ... which again contains some of my photos. There is an incredible amount of material on the site which is administered by an Indian ex pat called Shankar who lives in the UAE. Drop him a line if you want to add the link, mention I put you on to him, he is a terrific fan and has helped many of us put material on the web. I suggest you also check out John Lacey's sites of Indian photos. John lives in NSW and Shankar developed his pages and encouraged me to follow so I will also add another link:-

http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Bay/7942/ircolor.htm

Shankar also organized this page for me:- http://www.geocities.com/frontier_mail/goa.htm

If you would like a few extra photos on Asia I can offer you more Indian material (not previously published), and Pakistan,Indonesia, China and Turkey..the Asian side!

Ps my camera is an old Pentax KM and my slides/prints have been commercially copied to cdrom format; these days I'm more into video but cruising through sites like yours gets me all steamed up!

Thanks for that very interesting email, Trevor, and watch for further developments on these pages!

this very shabby (but still working) locomotive was found somewhere near Amritsar in March 1994 on my K2 trek which took travels though China, Pakistan and India. We flew to HK then to Beijing and on to Kashgar on the old Silk Route. After our trek we drove down the Karakoram Highway to Islamabad and eventually took a train across the border to Amritsar. From there to Delhi and for me the trip over to Darjeeling and back to Delhi.

This is a photo of the Toy Train at Darjeeling in India a narrow (2"6") guage line than runs from the Indian plain at Siliguri up 9,000 feet to Darjeeling. It has been running with the same loco's since the 1880's. It has an amazing 6 zigzags and 3 loops and runs mainly down the side of the main road, crossing the road inumerable times and running through the centre of several village main streets. It takes 8 to 10 hours to travel 120kms. The only people who pay for tickets are the tourists! Albeit about 20 Rupees from memory - about A$17 - first class!!

  • Description : I don't have any details on this photo, although it does suggest that the name of the railway is really Darjeeling and Himalya - in fact The Darjeeling Himalaya Railway. I've been calling it the wrong thing all this time. Just shows that you should do your research before committing pen to paper!

  • Description : Stewart writes: this is not a particularly good quality photo, having been taken on a very cheap camera back in 1982, but it's one of my favourites. We took this train to a place called Mount Abu in India. The loco is on a turntable - we had been on a zigzag. As you can see, our fellow passengers were fascinated by a loco being turned by two people pushing it round! We were the only non-Indians on the train. This was "Holy Day" and a number of windows were broken, including ours, by locals throwing stones at the train as it passed by!

  • Description : Another for the India collection. This is another mountain narrow guage line this time in the south of the country. This line runs to the old British hill station of Ootacamund, better known as Ooty. The Raj used to retire here from Madras to get away from the heat of the summer. These locos are Swiss designed. This is not a great quality photo having been taken on an instamatic.
