  • Date : Sep 1979, catalogued 02 May 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfacolor, slide number 8244
  • Description : Three of the very amiable conductors of the (narrow guage) Ghan that I travelled on in late 1979.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 95050 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 27 Nov 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 8138
  • Description : The view from the cab of NJ1 as she heads north with the Ghan. Note that the ballast is pretty non-existent!

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 121131 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 29 Nov 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfachrome, slide number 8191
  • Description : Approaching Heavitree Gap, we can see that the track is less than it should be! Hence the extensive 25 and 15 kph spreed restrictions on the narrow guage Ghan. The modern standard gauge has eliminated all this.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 122560 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 30 Nov 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfachrome, slide number 8207
  • Description : Crossing the Simpson desert, the only break in the monootony is the regular passing of telegraph poles. The shininess of the rails belies the apparently otherwise unused state of the track!

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 164473 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 01 Dec 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfachrome, slide number 8211
  • Description :
Another view of the Simpson Desert. This time the monotony is broken by a shallow watercourse, crossing the track at right angles in the middle distance. The track crosses the watercourse on the level, that is, it dips into the valley, across the creek bed, then up the other side. (There is usually no water in these watercourses. When there is, the train doesn't run!)
When crossing one of the larger watercourses, our train couldn't get up the other side. The driver simply reversed back as far as possible, then pulled full throttle! We rattled up the other side, rocking and rolling as tho' there were waves of water coming down the watercourse!
Compare this picture with the modern alignment in Loongana-1

  • Date : Oct 1979, catalogued 01 Dec 1998
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Agfachrome, slide number 8238
  • Description : A view of one of the interiors of the German-built Ghan passenger cars. These cars were originally used in Trans-Australia service. In the corner, Vic Isaacs chats with Ian Reynolds (facing camera), while David Cranney admires the view. All were ARHS ACT Divn members checking out one of the last narrow gauge Ghan trips.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 106434 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Feb 1982, catalogued 30 May 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12095
  • Description : The monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor Plain is pretty evident in this view from the window of the Indian Pacific. By the way, it's called a plain, because it's plainly evident that it is.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 54260 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Feb 1982, catalogued 30 May 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12096
  • Description : Perhaps reading a book is the way to go? It's speeding past in the background, but the monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor Plain is plainly not fascinating enough to distract the author's wife from her reading.

  • Date : Feb 1982, catalogued 30 May 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12097
  • Description : At last! Something to relieve the monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor. The train stops at Cook, and passengers are relieved to be allowed off the train to stretch their legs and gaze in awe and wonder at the few trees in Cook (no, it wasn't a plane tree!), and also to relieve the monotonous, but not treeless, state of the resident(s) of Cook.

  • Image : dir=anr/misc/ page=index 40980 bytes, pixels
  • Date : Feb 1982, catalogued 30 May 1999
  • Photographer : John Hurst
  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 12098
  • Description : No, they're not trees relieving the monotonous and treeless state of the Nullabor Plain, just some plain old power lines suppling the yard lighting at Cook. Well, calling it a yard is probably a little generous, but then you have to be generous when it comes to the Nullabor: it's SO BIG, and SO BORING! And, you'll be pleased to know, this is the last of these plainly boring captions. ENOUGH PUNishment!
