This page is for all those funny peculiar things that don't fit elsewhere.

Jokes

What gender should computers be referred to as?

A computer science professor thought he would try a little experiment with his class. He divided them up into two groups, men and women, and asked each group to work out what gender to use when referring to them.

When the men reported back, they unanimously said that computers should be regarded as feminine. Their reasons were:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
  2. When they speak to each other, they do so in code that no one else understands.
  3. Every mistake you make is stored for later retrieval.
  4. As soon as you commit to one model, you find that you have to spend half your pay on accessorizing them.

When the women reported back, they unanimously said that computers should be regarded as masculine. Their reasons were:

  1. To get their attention, you first have to turn them on.
  2. They have a lot of data, but still cannot think for themselves.
  3. They are supposed to solve problems, but half the time they are the problem.
  4. As soon as you commit to one model, you realize that if you had waited a little longer you could have got a better one.

Low Tech

My son Nathan put me on to this page. It describes all sorts of technical possibilities, limited only by the technology and culture of the time. It is the Low-Tech Magazine
